There are plenty of options out there when it comes to camera bags, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to find exactly what you want. The good news is that any bag can be made suitable for safely transporting a camera or other sensitive gear. All you need is a padded insert, such as this one from Caden that I picked up on Amazon for about $30. These are available in a number of different sizes (make sure what you order will fit your camera and lenses, not just the bag you’re looking to put it in) and are extremely well padded.
I ordered this insert to fit into my Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack and it worked out fairly well. I will admit that it takes a little bit of coercion to get it into the bag (it’s a tight fit) but it gets the job done. Now, DSLR users won’t be able to use this exact setup if they plan on stashing their camera body inside the bag. It works just fine for my mirrorless Sony NEX-6, though, with enough room in the main compartment for the body and three lenses.
The great thing about using a removable insert like this one is that it can be moved from bag to bag as needed; I’ve moved it over to my backpack and used it as a standalone way to store my gear in the truck. If discretion is an issue, such as when you’re traveling in a high-risk area and don’t want to telegraph your possession of expensive gear, you can easily place the padded insert into a nondescript tote or sack. (Crisis photographers have been known to walk around with their gear in a plastic grocery bag to avoid being targeted for theft.)
